Heifer Ranch
Jason had a four day weekend for Memorial Day and we decided to spend one of the days in Perryville, AR at Heifer Ranch. What an amazing mission these people are on. Take some time to browse their website and read about this volunteer-run ranch that is working to end world hunger. This was the most peaceful and simple place I had visited in awhile. Their headquarters, Heifer Village, is located in downtown Little Rock (next to the Clinton Library). We are hoping to get there in the next week or two to learn more about the mission of these great people.
It was an extremely HOT day, so the pigs were out in the shade, cooling off in some mud. They will be used for bacon, ham, pork...to feed the hundreds of volunteers on the ranch.
Here is one of the two water buffalo on the ranch. These "work engines" are affectionately named, Mr. Briggs and Mr. Stratton. We learned about a great story of a little girl in India who was able to attend school because of the gift of a water buffalo to her family. If you take the time to read their website, you'll learn about the continuous giving cycle Heifer Ranch has created. Once a calf is born, the family must find a needy family in their country to give the calf to. Then that family does the same. And so the cycle continues and one family at a time, children are getting educational opportunities their family wouldn't have otherwise been able to afford and families are able to provide food for their families that they once could not.
This is what Dakota thought of the ranch. You are looking at my awesome view of her when she is in the sling that Caitlin recently made for me. Snuggled up against Mommy - she is perfectly comfortable.
Our family outside the Heifer Hilton. It sure didn't look anything like any Hilton I've stayed in! There are several different options of places volunteers can stay. This one is very popular with church high school and college groups that come to volunteer.
