Kansas in August

Back in August, just before school started, the kids and I went down to Kansas one last time. We squeezed in a lot of fun in five days!


There were several babies that have been born since our last trip to Kansas, so holding some of these new babies was a priority on our list of "things to do in Kansas".

We had to make our annual stop in Olathe to see one of Olathe's finest;
Aunt Ninny. This is the first time Dakota stayed awake to see Ninny's police car!

It rained a few days we were there, but the kids did get a couple of days to swim in Memaw's pool.

A summer tradition from my younger days is the county fair in my home town. I loved going to the county fair in August. It always signaled the end of summer for me and it was fun to run into friends I hadn't seen all summer and talk about the upcoming school year. I have always loved looking at the hard work the 4H clubs have put in all summer and I really enjoy looking at all the different livestock on display. But let's be honest, the real reason I look forward to the fair is the FOOD! 

I was so excited to discover that it was fair week the same week the kids and I came to Kansas! The 4H displays did not disappoint and the livestock smelled exactly like I remember. I don't look as forward to running into people I know, like I did when I was 14, but I did get to see a few old friends and give an awkward wave and "hi" to old acquaintances. And oh the food. It definitely did not disappoint. I might have left with a slight belly ache, but it was worth it. 

The kids noticed the carnival rides immediately - ugh! So, Memaw treated them to a hand-full of tickets. 

All this kid wanted was chocolate ice cream and a red snow cone.
